In June 2024 Sibiu International Airport has obtained the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 1 - Mapping certification, issued by Airport Carbon Accreditation under the administration of WSP and ACI (Airports Council International) EUROPE.
This accreditation recognizes Sibiu International Airport's dedicated efforts to the management and reduction of CO₂ emissions as part of the airport industry's global commitment to the fight against climate change. Achieving this certification highlights Sibiu International Airport's commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility and its proactive approach to reducing its carbon footprint.
By entering at Level 1, Sibiu International Airport has committed to developing a detailed analysis of its CO2 emissions and establishing well-structured plans to reduce them. This marks an important first step in the airport’s journey towards decarbonisation.
Sibiu International Airport has already undertaken several initiatives to improve its environmental performance. In terms of energy efficiency, the airport is implementing LED lighting throughout the terminal and airport facilities and upgrading its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to reduce energy consumption.
The airport is also exploring the use of solar panels to generate renewable energy, aiming to reduce its reliance on conventional energy sources. Additionally, Sibiu International Airport is focused on waste management, with initiatives such as establishing waste segregation and recycling programmes to minimise landfill waste, as well as implementing composting programmes for organic waste generated by food and beverage outlets.
These efforts demonstrate Sibiu International Airport’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to reducing its carbon footprint.
